Angela Lizon
After 15 years of abstract painting, Lizon took a blank canvas and changed direction. Using her love of the absurd, her childhood memories and the experience of raising her own children, Lizon has fashioned a new world order which challenges our perceptions of ‘good and bad taste’, ‘kitsch and the cultural divide between the general public and the fine art world/elite.’
Yes the work may be rooted in kitsch imagery of fluffy cats with big eyes, cherubic babies with golden hair, a bit of bling here and a bit of girlie cuteness there, but that’s where it ends. The work is a far from the plastic pink princess, its hardcore cliché subversion!
Lizon draws you in with candy box charm but kicks back with a healthy dose of dark sinister fairytale. From colossal cats dressed in incongruous outfits and defenceless babies guarded by sinister marabou storks (aka the undertaker bird), Lizon’s work is a world away from ‘sugar and spice and all things nice’! It’s gritty, charming and full of attitude!
